PGPTools App Description

The application is intended for 1. PGP keys generation. 2. Importing of the existing PGP keys. 3. Encryption of outgoing messages. 4. Decryption of incoming messages. PGPTools means simplicity and convenience! Here are the main advantages of the application. You won’t have to surf the net for other PGP keys-generating software. Now everything is at your fingertips! By simply touching the screen you will be able to create a key to encrypt a message and send it to the subscriber in a way convenient for you. In two clicks, you will encrypt or decrypt messages that are securely hidden from onlookers. Perhaps you already have private keys and you want to maintain an active correspondence with their use. Our application can do this. With PGPTools you can import or export a pair of keys for further use. Simplicity and convenience are the main advantages of PGPTools.

I'll start off with the positives. First off, I think its great that this developer is making a security tool for users that uses PGP. Despite the proven security and effectiveness of PGP, it hasn't picked up much popularity with your "everyday" user. So when a developer(s) attempts to make something such as PGP more approachable, I certainly appreciate it and want to see more of it. Secondly, the application has received frequent updates, which is comforting to see with an application that is still making a name for itself. Abandonware is all too common these days, to an irritating level. So hopefully the updates (and improvements) continue. As for the negative side of it all...Unfortunately, this application doesn't make PGP any less obscure. I would imagine that if a user was unfamiliar with PGP or completely new to the use of it, they would probably be lost in the sauce using this. More guidance and tunneling, in terms of the UX, would be really helpful. Although this may be more of a personal preference, the interface just isn't that appealing - mainly in regards to the color scheme (the brown just was way to dark on some screens). I also still had problems getting it to function reliably, although some of the crashes were fixed in a recent update, I still experienced crashes and problems trying to import existing keys. Final notable point is that the application could really benefit from more integration or intuitive use with other applications or services that someone may commonly use or require PGP. Whether that be through Mail, cloud storage, or basic file encryption. Because even if this just functioned as a key manager, the lack of ability to sync with key servers makes it unfunctional.

Let me open with two caveats - first, I’ve been a Macbook user for less than two days, although I have used iPhones and iPads extensively for a number of years. And second, I have been using Symantec Desktop Encryption for Windows as my secure email and file/disk encryption tasks, which is a time-tested and highly capable app, albeit for Windows. With that out of the way, IMO this app was a complete waste of 99 cents. The app installed fine but there is no option to import existing keys; i.e., keys with a PGP-recognized format (.pfx, .asc, etc.), even your own existing key! You can apparently generate a new key but since I have one already and it is distributed to a number of business partners, I would prefer not having to create a new signing key. To “import” a key you have to copy the entire key block into memory and paste it into the Import text box. Every time I tried to do so, making certain to include both the “BEGIN” and “END" PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK as part of the key, the app crashed. If I tried to import an existing key in, for example, .asc format, the app crashed. And since there is no option to load a key from one of the Global Key Servers, that pretty much meant the app is useless, at least for my uses. After attempting to import keys several different ways over the course of an hour, I finally deleted the app from my Macbook. Gonna download and try GPG Suite 2015, maybe it’ll work better. As for this app, download at your peril. I gave it one star because I cannot give it zero stars and at least I only lost 99 cents. :)
