  • Looks like a good supplement but...

Not sure what was wrong with my app and/or device but none of the videos would play/had really long load times. The flash cards worked but I didn’t really download this app for those. It looks like it would be a good tool for people who started out with some basic grammar and vocabulary from another program. Rosetta Stone is still my go-to for now and it comes free through a lot of libraries.
  • Not worth the money

So I really like the Fluent-U blog a lot, and have always wanted to try out their app/site. I finally got a job and had some money to use on it for Japanese. There’s a 7 day free trial, and then you choose a payment plan. Since I didn’t have $240 to spare at that moment, I figured I would do the $30 a month plan if I liked it. Using it however it was nothing like I expected. Many of what they advertised to have for Japanese, videos and music, they did not have. Most of it was short, like around 30 seconds and majority ads. You could easily find most of the same stuff on YouTube, for free, and do what their doing on your own free of charge using the reiko dictionary app and Viki. So I decided it was most definitely not worth the money. Also within 5 minutes of making the account ( You can choose two payments, $240 all at once for The Whole year or $30 a month, I only know this because I looked it up before making the account, it never asked me to choose a plan however) they charged $240 to my account. $240 I didn’t want to pay and that I also didn’t have and still don’t. I immediately sent an email about this and they replied with that they were sorry for the mistake and we’re fixing it at the moment. That was last Saturday, today is Wednesday, nothing has been done. I sent another email just now, no response yet. However for anyone considering it, I highly advise against it. Not even the trial. There are many better resources, millions of free resources, and textbooks, better worth your money.

I have a good phone and I guess the screen was meant for a smaller phone because the screen is so small and also I tried to do 2 weeks free and so I put my email and stuff and it doesn’t let me press start because there isn’t a check box for saying I agree to the terms and conditions 😭😭😭😡😡😡🥵🥵🥵 I just want to learn Spanish

Small big, though. After going through an audio, sometimes, it doesn’t recognize that I’ve gone through it. I run through it a couple of time but then have to close and reopen the app, run it again and then it acknowledges I completed it and allows me to take the quiz
  • Good app but....

The speakers sound jumbled by machine and not flowing. Videos are fine because they are authentic voices. But when words are machine generated not too good. Try for a smoother experience. Also PLEASE increase daily goal possibilities to 3,000 point daily PLEASE INCREASE DAILY GOAL TO 3000 points!!!!!
  • Free trial only with credit card on file

I’m intrigued that videos are offered. I haven’t seen that on other language sites. Unfortunately, you can’t actually use the free trial without giving your credit card for future monthly payments. I’m very interested, but I don’t give out my credit card unless I know I want to use the resource for my kids and I. I would appreciate an opportunity, even if for the day, to peruse the site and try my hand at it before giving my personal and payment information. (I don’t know what star rating to give since I haven’t been able to interact with the content. I hate for a rating to be brought down when I’m rating the administrative choices in offering the free trial. ) Side note: I have a high school junior studying Russian who has decided to major in Russian in college. A high school freshman who has taken an interest in Italian, and a 4th grader wanting to study Spanish. I wonder, when noting at the start of the app what language you wish to study, are we locked into that language for that email sign-on or if the app is fluid and we can switch between languages?
  • One of the BEST Apps!

FluentU really brings you into the full experience of learning the desired language because it’s interactive, therefore, it “forces” fun participation to speak, read and spell, quickly. If you feel that you didn’t quite absorb what was being taught, you just have to go back and revisit the content. It’s up to you how fast you want to go. It’s GREAT!
  • After 2 week trial was over, charged a year subscription $239

    1. Be careful, this company will by default charge your credit card $239 for a years worth subscription instead of a monthly sub fee. We called our credit card company and they reversed the fee for us. You’ll need to go into your subscriptions and cancel it otherwise they’ll keep charging you. 2. Also, all these videos are available on YouTube free of charge. 3. This company is based in HongKong and their app is basically just an interface between YouTube and your mobile device.
  • Wish you got more for basic subscription

It’s better than Duolingo, but barely. And too expensive for what you get. The basic subscription is really limited and to get unlimited is $240/yr which seems like a lot for what it is so far. So far the videos aren’t as immersive as advertised and are the same basic vocabulary presented like any other course. Also I have the same issue with this as I have with Duolingo, which is when the other language phrases things differently it only gives the familiar version and not the literal translation, which can be confusing when trying to build on what we’ve learned so far. For example: Je suis une femme = I am a woman But I am hungry isn’t je suis faim, it’s j’ai faim. Literally “I have hunger”, but they don’t tell you that. I took French in high school and am refreshing what I already know but I feel like if I hadn’t I’d be really confused by that. Especially since even in the vocabulary list it says “I am hungry”. So basically so it’s a really expensive Duolingo that’s slightly more accurate in pronunciation. Meh. If it doesn’t improve soon I’m not paying for it once the trial is up.
