C&O Companion App Description

If you are planning a trip along the Chesapeake and Ohio Towpath, then don't leave without your C&O Companion. The information found on the popular BikeWashington.org canal website is now available in an app. Simply sync and go. No data connection required when you are on the path. While on the towpath, the C&O Companion will display your current location, and will help you find amenities along the way. It also has self-contained maps that do not require a data connection. In the event of an emergency, the C&O Companion will help identify your location, and the quickest way to reach help. Proceeds support the C&O Canal Trust Fund. ======================================= Troubleshooting: Less than 1-in-500 users have reported one of these problems with the application: a) Won't report location. If your app is stuck on "Finding Location" (and you are not in airplane mode), then this generally means that you did not allow the C&O Companion access to your current location. (A dialog box will ask your permission during first launch). This is easy to fix. Just open the "Settings" application (this app came with your device; it has the gray "Gears" icon) and look for "Location Services". Ensure that Location Services is ON, and that is has been enabled for the C&O Companion application. b) Sync never completes. Just one person reported that after pressing the Sync button, the download never completed. This is most likely due to a corrupted database. We fixed this by simply deleting the app and then using the iTunes application to reinstall the app from iCloud (no additional change is incurred for re-install). This procedure wipes out the database so you can start over fresh.

I just got back from a trip where I used this app and I pleasantly surprised. It was useful and motivating to know how far destinations are. I also used it for planning my trip.

Was worth it just for a day. Going to use it in a few weeks to do the whole towpath.

Bought for iPad - this is an iPhone app. But it should work. Why not? Nope. I tell it manually that I am at mile 58 (harpers ferry) and the amenities listed at that location….. none. null set. nada. Love the website. This is a GREAT service. Not upset if I pushed a little money to the author of the website as it is wonderful. But it no work on iPad.

Crashes every time you select a button for services, lodging, food, etc. Only the GPS map option works, which is unnecessary since markers are a mile apart and easily seen on the trail. Waste of money and useless on this trip.

Used it today between the aqueduct and whites ferry. Worked perfect the whole. Very helpful.
  • My favorite biking app

Most of my "long" rides have some component of the C&O involved… this app is a super helpful resource if only to answer the question I usually have: "where the heck am I?" Knowing where the closest H/B campsite is relative to my current location… where the closest "civilization point" is… super useful. If you're going to be on the C&O for any reason, for any length of time, this is a tremendous resource. Worth every penny. UPDATE Oct 2012 - I am honestly puzzled by the one star reviews. I've never had a problem with the app, and I've used it many times from mile 0 in DC all the way to Cumberland. Still my favorite biking app, and I wish there was a comparable one for the GAP!

I was looking forward to using this app while on the C&O. Unfortunately it didn't work at all the entire time I was on the trail so it was useless, a waste of $2.99. Every time I loaded the app it said that it was looking for my location. All of my other GPS based apps worked fine but not this one. Really disappointed.

Great app -- highly recommend it to anyone riding the C&O towpath. Invaluable for figuring out what's nearby and determining H/B campsites on the fly. Even though cell coverage is spotty along parts of the C&O, my network was always available, making this app worth the money. Thanks to whoever put this app together!
