Slow and buggy, updated

Still suffers from slow initial load times. Scrolling often fails, such that the viewing position of the article list is “clamped” to a limited length, preventing you from perusing content. The workaround is to change categories then change back.
Recent update introduced a new article layout. Disappointing step backwards in visual quality. Has a dated, unprofessional “clickbait” look to it. Many headlines don’t fit in the space allowed so you can’t understand what some articles are about without clicking on them. Many thumbnails and images still don’t properly load. If you click on a push notification to read a new article, it sends you to a web page within the journal app that asks you to take a survey. If you hit back or otherwise close this page, the article is often not available in the app. Guessing this has to do with how articles are pushed to the app, but it’s pretty confusing and a poor user experience. Still annoyed that I have to choose to skip the e-reader option every time I open the app. Perhaps the app could detect the Nth consecutive time I’ve skipped the e-reader and then ask “would you like to go straight to the app in the future?” I choose OK, “you can always find the latest e-reader in the options menu!”
Recent big update is buggy. Figured I'd let the dust settle before reviewing because I understand it's impossible to catch everything before release. To my surprise, none of the bugs I've been encountering have been addressed, in fact there was a new one introduced.
Loading the app now takes an agonizingly long time. So much so that I open it about half as often as I used to. (iPhone 6s)
I never use the e-reader, so why can't I at least choose an option to default to my preferred choice? It feels like this "decision point" is the part that takes so long to load.
Thumbnail images when perusing articles rarely load, feels like 1/3 or fewer ever display.
Apostrophes are not displayed, instead you have to strain your brain because they are replaced with "'" Articles with many apostrophes are very hard to read.
If you press the "refresh" button to refresh content it takes considerably longer than it did in previous versions. Also even after refreshing, the redundant "tap to refresh" button STAYS until you tap it and refresh again! Refreshing the "old fashioned" way (swiping down while at the top of page) it also doesn't remove this annoying button.
It feels like the article headlines are cut off early in some cases - Like the headlines don't fit the character limitations in the new version so sometimes a headline won't make sense in the space allowed.
Cosmetically, the splash screen is nice.

Living in Las Cruces, we generally get the paper with the news being a day late. Sports news results is always “late”. I’m trying the E journal to see if it’s any better. If it is then it’s a 5 *****.
I have been subscriber for 20+ years. In the last year I have had lots of delivery problems. Wet newspaper, no paper wrong paper ad finally late paper. Today we had to go someplace and didn’t see the paper. We figured it was late. Finally we called and we were advised we have to call before 9am to get a new paper. I was giving the carrier the benefit of doubt. Now NO PAPER. We are seriously considering dropping the paper and just buying it when there’s something we need to see in print. The dollar store sells the paper for $1. It’s sad that they don’t have a quality control problem.
I’ve been reading ABQJournal via app for several years and it is convenient but it just keeps getting worse and worse till now it is just near impossible to download. This morning the app just quit with the message that connection was two slow! I checked my connection speed at 33Mb/s! Deleted app and retried and got new message that now connection was not possible!
Conclusion: need app that works. I’m getting close to quitting ABQ Journal!
In the process of deleting and reinstalling as it is stuck on an old issue without a way to re-fresh. Delivery of the paper version is just as bad.
By please clean up up your app!
I tried to change the stars from a previous review but could not.
We have two family members on our subscription, but 90% of the time the app will only allow one person to download the paper. This app has always been full of problems, but this is the worst.
The sad thing is that the developers get the reviews, and they are the ones who should be fired. Please do not send a canned response.
Time for a letter to Mr Lang.
The app for Albuquerque Journal is a mess: Try to respond to a comment. Sometimes you get comments, other times the screen goes gray. They want to charge to see some things. I would pay if they had a decent app!
This update corrected a lot of the issues.
Our one I pad is very slow loading, the other one loads just fine. It is a lot better than it was.
Bring back the old version
The new "replica" version is awful. Terrible. Horrible. Pick your adjective. No more links to the second page of a multi-page article. No more bottom toolbar to easily scroll to other sections. Yes, I know there is a section selector within the menu, but it is nowhere near as convenient. Pretty soon, no more subscription.

I'll bump up my review one star for the latest updates, which at least show an effort to respond to customer criticisms. But there is still a long way to go.
In response to the developer comment, yes, I know you can tap on the article to see the whole thing in a "reader" mode. But I prefer the formatting of newspaper columns. It is easier on the eyes (or on mine, at least). Plus, I often don't decide to read an entire article until I am part way through it. If I then have to switch to reader mode to continue, it is hard to find my place. Please return the links to jump between pages of a multi-page article.
The returned page browser shows some effort in being responsive to customer wishes, but it comes nowhere close to the old browser. Opening the browser always shows page 1 first, not the page you are on. The numbers overlaying the pages are sequential, not the way they are numbered in the paper. For example, in today's paper, the first page of the business section is 9, not B1. The section names are not listed above the pages, like I think they used to be. The size of the thumbnails makes if hard to figure out their content - weren't they formerly larger? Finally, the old functionality of tapping near the bottom to bring up the page browser was easier and required fewer taps than the new menu method.
I do like that you can now read papers without downloading. I don't like that you can no longer set them to be automatically deleted, or that you can only delete one at a time when removing them manually.

I was starting to at least get used to the new app, even if I still didn’t like it as much as the old one. The developer did fix automatic deletions of downloads. Hyperlinks to continued pages were never added back. App page numbers still do not match paper page numbers. But like I said, I was getting used to it.
Now, though, the section browser is broken. The first pages of sections appear at random locations, not sequentially where they belong, and sometime appear more than once. And sometimes the “reader” view of an article does not display properly. It’s almost got to the point where you have to flip one page at a time, sometimes forwards and then backwards, just like a physical newspaper.
Are you ever going to get this right?
Very poor app
This app quits randomly, spends an inordinate amount of time “Preparing your download” during which nothing else can be done, and is very slow to start up. Unfortunately it is the only access to the electronic edition of the Albuquerque Journal that I have. I’d like to rate it zero stars.
