PeakFinder USA East App Reviews
Lots to see
Just like the western version, I have not yet used the app outside, and it is still loads of fun. Any geography or map enthusiast should give it a try. I would like to see a better method of rendering the labels. Although the app is very easy to use without any instructions, the way online users guide will reveal a little more depth.
Ironically, the illustration of the app shows peaks in the Adirondacks which is where I wanted to use the app but most of the peaks from where I sit are not named. Also, on a range there is so little differentiation between peaks that it is impossible to tell from the app which peak is which on the vista. Very disappointed because I was looking forward to using this app and I thought that illustrating it in the Adirondacks, it would be wonderful. I found it to be worthless—don’t waste your money.
This is excellent, and $4 is peanuts. Bravo!
A great find!!!
Living in western North Carolina we are surrounded by beautiful vistas. But identifying the numerous peaks can be very difficult...until this app. Have purchased others that just didn't fill the bill. Some were difficult to master, some were outright cryptic. This app has made it extremely easy to identify the peaks on my horizon. Some are 35-40 miles away. The app interface has been well thought out and unlike other apps really represents the horizon I see from my viewpoint.
Would give it 5 stars if I could print out the screen.
I live in a mountainous region and always wonder what the different peaks are along the mountain ranges. This allows directional control and identifies what the major peaks are. The ability to regularly update the database is another great feature.
By That App State Guy
Peak finder is perhaps the most useful augmented reality software I have ever used. After owning the app for a year, I've found it to be accurate, user friendly, and worth every penny. A real crowd pleaser too... It never fails to wow friends.
I live in the North Carolina mountains, so knowing your landmarks can be crucial to giving directions, or finding a recommended trail. Peak finder has taught me more about the surrounding area in one year than I've learned from any other source in the three before having peak finder. Also, I don't often write reviews, but Peak Finder is one of the few apps that I find worth praising.
I can't wait to see what else the creator(s) develop.
product is fun, but often halts and
will not track with device motion
Find peaks with your iPhone. Use your current position or select from a map. The price for mountain range is deceptive ... I expected to pay for both the Adirondacks and the Catskills. But this covers the whole East Coast of America!
Always wanted this
Everyone I show the Peak Finder app to is amazed and wants to get it. Lots of times you wonder what it is you see out on the horizon. Well, get this app and know what magnificent mountain majesty you are beholding. Works very intuitively and clearly. If you are too close to a peak, it will sometimes not show the peak name, do to line of sight, but if you dont know that much about your location, get a map.
Crashes when I try to scroll beyond initial screen in Peak Directory
I have this for my droid and it works well. It's easier to ID peaks with silhouettes than from Video AR (augmented reality) apps which may not be calibrated/aligned or the video may be poor because of lighting.
I bought it for my ipad for larger screen size and field of view but I can not scroll past the first screen in the peak directory because of immediate crash. If I manually enter the lat/long of a peak I can get there, but this is a pain. I can work around this using the google map feature to scroll around to the area I am looking for.
Since I can not easily look for peaks by name in the state where I live (NH), I am currently giving it 3 stars. Fix this problem and it's 4 stars. Improve usability and it will be 5 stars.
