The Sibley eGuide App Description

Now on Sale!!! The most popular printed field guide to North American birds is now available in its entirety on the iPhone and iPad! **If you would like to experience the app check out the newly released Sibley eGuide to the Birds of North America LITE which is FREE and includes 30 species.** We have taken the simplicity and ease-of-use that you have enjoyed on your iPhone/iPod Touch and expanded and redesigned the layout (not simply “stretching” it) to take full advantage of the larger screen area of the iPad while still being the same app that runs on the iPhone/iPod Touch. The Sibley Guide to Birds has become the most popular and fastest selling printed guide to birds as well as the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to North American Birds: Over 6600 images. Every species is shown perched and in flight from above and below. Shows every major seasonal, age, and male/female variation. Detailed coverage of subspecies and regional variations. Detailed maps showing not just winter and summer range but also migration and rare occurrence. Detailed descriptions of songs and calls, comparing similar species measurements of length, wingspan, and weight for every species. Now all of that information is available in an easy-to-navigate portable format on the iPhone/iPad. In addition, this version of the app also includes: ● Swipe to move to the next or previous species. ● One-tap enlargement of images and rotating the device expands images further. ● Over 2300 carefully-selected and edited sound recordings. Nearly all species are represented with multiple examples showing the range of vocalizations. ● The ability to compare any two images, maps, or sounds, side by side on the screen. ● The ability to filter by state/province, so that you see only the species likely to occur in your location, and to further reduce the possibilities to the most common birds in that area. ● The ability to search by distinguishing features such as size, prominent colors, habits, and group. ● A basic personal species list* that stores your sightings saved to the device with the ability to export the list using email or iTunes file sharing. *Uninstalling/reinstalling the program will result in the loss of your list, it is recommended that you keep your own backup (master list) separate from the application. We invite all users to share their comments and ideas on our forum at www.mydigitalearth.com NB. This Application WILL ONLY work on an iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch running iOS V6.1 or higher NOT A NORMAL IPOD CLASSIC/NANO and the download is about 400MB.

  • Great but one annoyance with update

I love this app! Very well made. However, with the update on iPhoneX, the play/pause buttons on the bottom of the screen interfere with the location of the bottom “home” bar.
  • Huge disappointment

I am a retired ornithologist, and I use many field guides almost daily, both electronic and standard book guides. Because the Sibley field guide book is well known, I purchased this Ap. Unfortunately, this Ap is relatively poor, especially if you compare it to iBird Pro. I rated this Ap at 1 star, and I would rate iBird Pro at 4.5 stars. A 5 minutes comparison of these 2 Aps will quickly verify my rating.
  • Some glitches

The back < button doesn’t work on iPhone 8 iOS 11.3.1. So you can swipe hard but end up going back to main lists. The scroll down lists is somewhat sluggish & jerky. Male & female differences not determined in a lot of species. But it’s a nice app. Just needs some fine tuning.
  • Taxonomic search

Useless taxonomic search! For example, it will show species containing with the word “thrush” if you search for thrushes, but won’t show the full list of thrushes unless you happen to know how to find the group by scrolling! Word search should be keyed to the bird GROUPS, not bird common names.
  • Great support

I’ve been using this guide for some time on an iPad mini. It has a slightly weird interface but it works well apart from that until the latest version. The search window above the list of birds is now mostly hidden. Complained about this issue yesterday from an update last week and it is already fixed. Great support!
  • Unable to type search with iPhone X

The location where you type search terms is hidden on the iPhone X. This is now fixed, so the app is now working and is great.
  • Great Mobile Field Guide!!

I have used various apps and mobile field guides for both North America as well as several other regions around the world. Sibley’s is among the best that I have used. It is user friendly, comprehensive and has a great array of vocalizations. Update Needed for iPhoneX. Top of search bar is cut off.
  • Can’t see search field when searching!

Stupid update broke search! The top banner mostly covers the search box so you can’t see what you’re typing! Also, if the list of species returned from a search extends down into keyboard area, there’s no way to click on a choice down there. Can’t close keyboard. May be able to pull list up to see bottom but it springs back when you let go. So you can’t click on anything near bottom of list. STUPID. Didn’t you folks try this out before you released update?
  • Needs iPhone X screen layout update

I would give this five stars, but the developer has not updated the app to accommodate the iPhone X screen, which obliterates the search function.
