The New York Review of Books App Reviews

  • It doesn't even work!!!

    By Frustrated New Customer
I installed this app (iPad and iPhone) about 4-5 weeks ago and everything was great, until... the app started crashing after a few minutes of use. Needless to say, it made for a horrible reading experience, so I reached out to their support folks. What followed was straight out of the old Microsoft Windows days: "uninstall and install it again to see if it fixes your issue," they emailed me. So I uninstalled it and installed it again and then I couldn't even login into my account OR restore my previously downloaded issues!!! Furthermore, since the iTunes subscription doesn't allow you to login to the magazine's website, there is no way to read any of the articles!!! To add insult to injury, my new options sent by the support team is to wait until a new version of the app is made available, with no clear indications as to when it may happen! To get my money back is yet another story and NOT dealt by the support team. I'm saddened to say that this has been a very unpleasant experience for me and that I will pursue my opinion of getting my money back as soon as possible.
  • Clunky and unattractive

    By Buddhistfunk
I love this publication but hate this app. It crashes often, loads slowly, and changing view for better readability often does not work. The unattractive design also hampers it.
  • App does not work well.

    By JNet77
I had problems signing in so I went ahead and paid $6.00 just to read one article. The app crashed multiple times, making that nearly impossible. App in serious need of bug fix.
  • Impossible to read on a phone

    By pvk prasad
Pointless app. Their website works beautifully on mobile, but the app simply reproduces the print edition. There is certainly a charm in seeing the print layout — in the way the Review was intended to be read — but in practice what this means is you receive a miniature version of the broadsheet reproduced on your screen. In order to make the text legible you’ll need to pinch and zoom, not scroll. It feels as though you were reading by magnifying glass. A pain. There must be a way to deliver the content in a sensible way while also preserving the option of viewing the edition’s print layout. Also, the large banner at the top instructing subscribers how to login never goes away.
  • clip and save

    By bogus request
I bought the on line edition as a traveling companion. For the most part I am pleased with it. One feature I would like to have would be the ability to easily copy and save articles. I clip and save from the print edition. if there is a clip/copy and save feature in the digital I have yet to figure it out.
  • Why

    By Wicklem
Can’t sign in to my special offer 10 issue digital subscription.
  • The resolution is weird

    By Hythlodaeus
The resolution of the app seems zoomed in for some reason.
  • Terrible

    By ArvGarg
Signing in is frustrating. Every time you read an article and want to go back to the contents, you have to sign in again. In comparison LRB app is a delight.
  • I like the newspaper feel of the display

    By aileverte
I really love being able to view articles the way they are printed on the page, especially as I travel a lot I now rely on the digital subscription. Issues I sometimes encounter: * need to delete and reload an issue because upon opening it’s blank * sometimes difficult to launch the “web” view Features I wish the app had: * a scrapbook - to save articles I wish to return to, for easy access * ability to copy text from the “print” view or look up unfamiliar terms in dictionary without having to retype them
  • Features don’t work

    By AshDhru
The feature to read articles on a phone doesn’t work AT ALL!! I have to zoom into portions of the article in order to read it! Can you fix this?? NYRB is an expensive subscription; the least you can do is to make your app work properly so we can read what we’re paying for!!
