  • Not Executed Well

    By Pharagill
The controls are not laid out well at all, despite a few options to choose from. Ducking and climbing are especially difficult. The worst problem is that Attack and Jump cover portions of the right side of the screen no matter how you format it (just look at the store screenshots). Of course, that’s the direction most monsters and projectiles are coming from, so it’s a constant annoyance, and needlessly adds difficulty to an already challenging game. There’s also no preview of what the control layout’s going to look like when you choose in the menu, so you can’t find out until going back in the game where you’re almost constantly under attack. There’s no good chance to test your options and decide what will work better. My other major complaint is that continues don’t work the same as the original game. After game over you continue from the start of the level - not the checkpoint. This is especially a pain when you’re on the first level and have to watch the opening scene every time. Also, you don’t keep your weapon when continuing. It always goes back to the lance. The only improvement is that you can switch between weapons you’ve collected in the menu, but since you’ll lose them every few lives, it almost doesn’t even matter. Even on “casual mode”, this game is very difficult, and for the wrong reasons - not being able to clearly see the screen and poor controls. I guess for $2 it’s not a huge waste. It’s still kind of fun to have the game on my phone and I’ll probably still play it if I have to pass some time somewhere. The sound effects and music are also very good. The gameplay just seems like it could have been better, though, and it’s a bit of a disservice to the original game.
  • Bad

Not good with touch screen, and can’t use with remote. Don’t waste your time and money.
  • Not playable without MFi

    By Ryusui
Seriously? No support for MFi controllers? This game was hard enough on the NES, but on a touchscreen, it’s near impossible to play. How much harder is it to add support for a physical controller? The graphics and sound are amazing - this is a beautiful port from the 8-bit era. But without the controller’s just app store fodder.
  • Controls

Would be a lot better with controller support
  • Great

    By The One You Dread
The game is legendary for it’s difficulty, that being said, this version of the game is perfectly fine. I’m sure if you could hook a controller to it it would be easier. Be easier if someone else beat it for you too.
  • Great Game, Needs a Continue Option

    By Qbinator
Agree with what others have written, and would only add: Capcom, please create an update that allows us to continue multiple times - just too hard, to have to go back to beginning each time.
  • Needs better controls

    By TurkeyPuncher
I like this game is just a port and not redone. I wish there was a control option to also hide the jump/attack buttons.
  • Controllers make it unplayable

    By Deathrockabilly
Several controller options and NONE of them accurately mimic the direction pad / A B button layout. Makes it unpleasant to play
  • Not cool.

App literally won't download. I've been trying for days. I want my money back.
  • The Real Deal

    By MrSqueezeMe
Authentic through and through. In the early levels the on screen controls were easy to get used to though with noticeably less swiftness than the old arcade console. But the casual mode gives an advantage to mitigate the challenge. For two bucks it's a must have especially if you loved the original. It would be nice to be able to connect an arcade style controller!
