Day One Journal App Reviews

  • Okay BUT There are (or were) Large Issues

    By jamiecoates
The app is fun to use BUT buyers should be aware of two considerable issues. 1. The premium/subscription feature that allows your journal to sync across your devices relies on Day One’s servers to be up and running. Their servers have gone offline in the past and in one instance was over a week! Users like me were angry because none of their content would or could sync. Did they care? Answer, no! They simply responded with robot like response such as “sorry for the inconvenience.” Really? Take a good look at their real and not what they report as their up time. I think you will not be happy. 2. And this is huge if you want your notes to be secure and not readable by anyone by yourself. ALL of your locked notes in Day One are fully readable without any password whatsoever if someone points one of several free Day One-like Windows based apps to your database. I found this out by mistake because at the time I was using Apple and Windows. I was utterly shocked that all my private notes were fully readable in Windows without any need for a password. I reported the security bug to Day One. Again and in the same way they acted when their servers were down for over a week, they essentially shrugged off finding and tried to downplay the security flaw. (I think they knew about it and tried to hide it or hoped someone would not find it). I was shocked by their complete disregard for concern or willingness to correct it. In all fairness they might have corrected this issue by now but I wouldn’t know because I abandoned the app because of a clear pattern of poor service and responsibility. I must assume they will respond to this review and say otherwise but that would only fit their past behavior. I recommend the app if you don’t care about relying on syncing or care about locking your notes. If it does concern you then this is not the app for you. Hope this helps.
  • Deleted all my entries

& I paid for this app! So disappointed that I have never gone back. I mean what if it happens again? 🤷‍♀️
  • Great App that everyone should have!

    By jrpxpdon20
I’ve never kept s journal, diary or anything. I won’t even blog regularly even though I have had several. This app is quick, elegant, efficient and handy. I take photos all day every day, and I love to photo document my day. I love the reminders to jot my thoughts down. I even have different journals for different things. I feel so much better when I write in day one and it’s amazing. Thank you for making such a great companion for me to but that thoughts down securely. This is a must have for everyone!
  • The Big Oof.

    By LeoCronis
So you locked dark mode as a premium. Ouch. That's a no go for me. Some minor features also make me go OOF from roblox because many other apps set some features for free. It's like making a handicap pay a fee for using a acessability ramp that they need. Nah, not even gonna write up my Naval experiences on this app. Might go back to Evernote. Update: I never said everything, I said "minor". Also, it happens to be that other services offer subscriptions for storage only, not extra features like Dark Mode. And by the response given back, wow. Sounds like gruntled shame. "Ok, but like Dark mode should be a luxury, not a freebie. Geez, get off my back. And yeah, I think I added back to Evernote just fine, because they got that one small feature and others that this app only covers for a subscription fee. "Hey, can't read and need glasses? Maybe for a monthly fee for maintenance and service, you can borrow these sick glasses with googly eyes and UV protection. Don't mind us, we got you covered."
  • Amazing app but one caveat.

First I want to say that this app is very well made. You can clearly see the effort that they put into it. My only complain is that it doesn’t let me upload video entries. The competition can do video entries but it doesn’t do anything else nearly as well as this app. Overall I’ll give the app a 4/5 stars but if they add video entries then it will definitely be a 5/5.
  • Worthless

    By Telfire
Why are so many journaling/record keeping apps developed for only one OS? Do you have any idea how dumb that is? Something like this app is rendered completely worthless by the fact that you cannot check your data from another device and even more importantly that there is no way to input anything with a real keyboard. I’m supposed to keep a WHOLE JOURNAL from my iPhone? With my thumbs? Seriously? Whose bright idea was that? NO ONE WILL EVER USE THIS. They might like the design of the app but people don’t have 10X extra time to waste by journaling from a phone keyboard instead of a real keyboard. Keyboards and PCs exist for a reason. Any app that isn’t cross platform in 2019 isn’t worth a hoot.
  • Killing my battery

    By Beeson 970
I’ve had this app for a year. However, recently the sync is getting stuck and killing the battery in my device. I have to kill the app to get it to quit. I wish there were a better way to report this to devs, but there’s no way to (that I can find) forum, contact email, etc. Unfortunately, this is a super big problem and I’m hoping this will get some attention and a quick fix. It’s only been happening with the latest updates (the last 2 or 3 weeks). If this continues, I’ll be forced to stop using it as my battery can’t take it. Hope you guys are listening and in the future, please provide some sort of way to get important issues addressed quickly and hopefully a little more discreetly.
  • It’s great!

I just wish that I could export entries correctly.
  • Best journal app available and great support

    By Johnny Boy ***
I have journaled for years from hand written, to a word doc, to several apps. I have used Day One for 3 years and fall more in love with every day. -I use it across iPad, Mac, phone, and watch, it’s everywhere I want to be, thus making journaling easy and fun. -I print a hardcover book(s) for every year. They are an easy to create, and great looking way to preserve a physical copy. -Adding pictures and location data enhances the experience and makes looking back so much more fun. -Customer Supprt has been quick, effective, and they do more than expected. I had an issue with a book printing incorrectly and I can’t say enough about how having real, live, responsive support is, it is so refreshing. They took a little annoyance and turned it into a huge positive interaction with Day One Journal. -The premium price is less than the discount when I print my book at years end. Bottom line this is the best journal app with the best feature and the best support available!
  • Not user friendly

    By Cybervet
Hard to login then difficult to learn how to make entries-Not user-friendly I should’ve run it would be trouble when it was difficult to figure out whether I already had an account or should login using my Apple ID, need to make a new account? Trying to figure all of that out I somehow got my Apple ID linked to two separate journaling accounts. Decided to go ahead and give it a try anyways and to be honest could not even figure out how to make my first entry ! Perhaps this is because I am using an iPad as my first device but I didn’t see or read anything indicating I should have a problem with my iPad. I’m going to cancel my subscription before it kicks in and look elsewhere for a journaling app.
