There’s a lot good to say about this game. When it comes to exploring disparate elements in the disparate Ninja Turtles timelines, no game has done so much to feature so many together. Most characters hail from the 2012 Nickelodeon show, complete with multiple versions of some characters from there, but there are also characters and versions of characters from the Platinum Dunes movies, the Fred Wolf cartoon, and even the original Mirage books. All are very well-animated, though some may not like how the Mirage characters’ special moves make them out to be living drawings. Also well-done are environments. The gameplay isn’t anything you haven’t seen before if you’ve played turn-based RPGs, but it’s still fun. Slow progress, though, makes this a game you’ll either cough up money for or only play once in a while, during the time of day after you get free stuff. To be fair, there are lots of different modes and you can often find something you can afford to play, but the story mode gets reduced to a crawl more and more due to enemies that get stronger faster than your characters can. The good news is that if you have enough energy, you can actually enable an AI to play the game for you; it’s not too smart so I don’t recommend it in tough missions, but if you just want to grind against weaker foes for experience and loot, it works fine to keep you from getting bored. Alas, this is the sort of game where not even grinding is free; instead of just time, it costs energy, meant to be refilled with real money purchases. That also prompts me to mention that this app may not live too much longer; seeing as it is based on a version of TMNT that has since ended, and it has seen no references to the new version since. So keep that in mind when deciding whether to spend money on it. It would have been really nice to have more ad-enabled features to grant resources. I also see fit to warn about some of the links used to grant more greenbacks; some ask for contact info so if you’re not comfortable providing it, you probably shouldn’t waste time doing those activities. Other complaints: No characters from the Jim Henson or 4Kids universes, no Renet even though she’s been playable in three universes, and the latest instance of that ever-present flub of misnaming Miyamoto Usagi to “Usagi Yojimbo”, which is just the name of his manga series. The music also isn’t anything special and you’ll probably want to turn it down and play something else after you’ve heard it more than enough times.
